Traffic Marshal and Banksman Course

This course is designed to meet the challenges of many trades and professions in the construction industry which require a Traffic Marshal and Banksman. It is likely that you will want to take this course to broaden your skill set and therein increase your career opportunities.

What is a Traffic Marshal and Banksman?

Traffic Marshals and Banksmen are operatives trained to plan temporary or permanent routes and barriers for all vehicles, monitor vehicle movement, traffic levels and efficiency, and direct traffic entering and leaving a construction site such as deliveries or pickups.

Are Traffic Marshals and Banksmen still employed to direct reversing vehicles?

Yes, but only if trained specifically and authorised. There is a hierarchy of control which places segregation at the top. Banksman should only be used in circumstances where other control measures are not possible.

How can we keep Traffic Marshals and Banksmen safe?

  • Ensure they are trained and competent to direct moving vehicles.
  • Provide a protective position from which they can work safely.
  • Provide distinctive ‘HI VIZ’ clothing for identification and visibility.
  • Ensure drivers are aware that if they can’t see the Traffic Marshal and Banksman they should stop immediately.
  • Agree on the use of standard signaling protocols.

Why is it important to take this course?

One of the main reasons for employing a Traffic Marshal is to improve safety standards on a construction site. Every year about 50 people are killed and more than 5000 people are injured in accidents involving workplace transport in the UK. The most common cause for accidents are people falling from or being struck by a vehicle or objects falling from a vehicle or from vehicles overturning.

Nearly a quarter of all deaths involving vehicles at work occur while the vehicle is reversing. Many other reversing accidents do not result in an injury but cause costly damage to vehicles, equipment and premises.

Almost all of these accidents can be avoided by taking simple precautions which are fully explained during the course.
